College textbooks are big business. Anyone who has bought a semester’s worth of them knows that they are very expensive, especially new books. New editions come out every few years, depending on the changes in the subject matter the book addresses. Be sure to visit three or four to get the best possible prices. Typically, you will search by book title or ISBN, and should be able to find what you’re looking for pretty quickly. Competition tends to drive prices down online. Be sure to factor in shipping when adding up the total, if applicable. Many online booksellers offer free shipping on orders over a certain dollar amount. It is also vital to find out whether the website has the book in stock. Having to wait for a book that is back ordered may create problems if its arrival is delayed beyond the start of the semester. Once again, the earlier you begin, the more you will save on books.

At the risk of sounding old, I’m going to tell you how I feel about modern technology, reader: things are getting too complicated. If you knew me, you’d tell me that it was weird to hear such a thing come out of my mouth. Really, though, it’s true. While I love my video games and my high definition TV, I feel like some of the greatest things in life are being obscured by modern technology. Take, for example, the book . While it was once heralded as the pinnacle of intellectual stimulation and entertainment, it’s now losing some of its steam (and some of its profitability). Really, that’s a very sad thing.
Of course, I’ll have to stop significantly short of saying that the book has lost its popularity entirely. That simply isn’t the case. There are still plenty of people who prefer reading to video gaming; plenty of people who prefer curling up and reading to heading out to the local theatre. This, though, does not mean that novel sales are not declining. In fact, they are declining. I suppose that I shouldn’t find this to be too surprising, as all forms of print media are suffering rather terribly right now. Still, though, I find it deeply lamentable.
What we are seeing a lot of, nowadays, are adaptations of the book. If a story comes out in print and gains a certain amount of popularity, then it’s only a matter of time before they make it into a video game franchise, a move franchise, and a clothing line. What’s sad is that these adaptations often become more popular than the source material from which they sprout. If a book gives birth to a series of movies, then nine times out of ten, the movies are going to make a lot more money (and catch a lot more attention, regardless of their quality; regardless of their faith to the source material from which they pull).
If you are looking to do your part to make sure that novels do not become a thing of the past, then you are simply going to have to take the time to start reading again. Actually get out there and subscribe to your favorite magazines. Get out there and buy a few hardcover versions of your favorite novels, sending much needed money to the authors who write them. And be sure that you are subscribing to your local newspaper as well, as these publications are suffering even more than standard novels. If we do not act; if we do not consume this material—then it’s going to be gone before we even know it. And really, that would be a terrible shame.
So, the next time that you are at the store, go ahead and pick yourself up a nice book to read when you are on the bus. While your reading speed may have gone down from all of the video games that you’ve played—from all of the movies that you’ve watched—you’re going to be able to pick it back up in hardly any time at all. And not only are you going to have a great time reading quality novels, you are going to be helping the industry as a whole stay alive. If you ask me, that’s a pretty noble cause.

Improving at the Speed of Lightning

Do you fancy yourself as a future purveyor of books ? Do you really want to see your novels on the shelf when you head into your local novel store? If so, then you really do have your work cut out for you. This, though, is not to say that you are not going to be able to find success if you really put your mind to it. Finish two or three manuscripts before you worry about contacting all of the major publishers who are in your area. That way, you know that you’ll have something that they’ll like.
Moving on, here, you have to be sure that you have copy protection when it comes to your books . The last thing that you’d want, here, is to have one of your ideas stolen before you can successfully finish the manuscript yourself. There are plenty of sites out there on the web that can offer basic copy protection for a small fee (many of them refer to themselves as “guilds”). If you are concerned about the safety of your intellectual property, do yourself a favor and be sure that you are paying the small fee to keep your idea protected.
Finally, here, know that you cannot spend all of your time writing if you really want to become an author. The very best authors spend an equal amount of time reading books . While you may think that you are going to be able to come up with all of your own ideas; while you may think that you are not going to need an inspiration—you simply have to expose yourself to the styles of other authors if you ever hope to improve. If you are in college, then you are going to want to be sure that you are actually doing all of your reading assignments. Even if you are in the heat of a terrible deadline, you have to be sure that you are finding the time to read up on the authors that your professor selects. In the long run, it’s going to benefit you tremendously.
So, stick in there, reader. Before you know it, you’ll be selling your books like hot cakes! Just remember, here, that practice makes perfect. Read as much as you can, and try to write at least 1,600 words per day. If you can manage to hold yourself to that schedule, then you are going to improve with lightning speed!

You Have the Resources to Master Your Textbook

College academics are pretty demanding when you think about it. Unlike high school and vocational school, traditional four year universities essentially set out to make their students prove that they are worth the diplomas that they seek. Part of proving yourself, you might guess, is mastering the art of reading your textbook . Now, before you accuse me of melodrama, allow yourself to think about how you can actually put your textbook to use. If you are simple completing your reading assignments; if you are not putting any thought into how you might lend a bit more efficiency to your studying process—then you’re no doubt falling behind. By changing a few simple things, you can guarantee that you are staying ahead of the pack (or, at the very least, right there with the pack).
Do you have terrible handwriting? Are you always struggling to read the notes that you leave in the margins of your textbook ? If so, then you might want to consider typing your notes as you make your way through your reading assignments. Typing is generally faster than writing by hand, meaning that you are not going to have to spend as much time recording the important facts that you encounter. And typically speaking, you can type on a computer without looking at what you’re typing. When you write traditional notes on a traditional sheet of paper, you have to look at what you’re writing it as you write it. What all of this means, of course, is that taking your notes on the computer is going to allow for you to move forward at a much quicker pace. You won’t even have to look away from your text to jot down all of its important tidbits.
If you would rather avoiding typing your notes, then you might consider purchasing a voice recorder. Indeed, as you are making your way through your textbook , you can keep your voice recorder handy. Simply record the important information that you would normally write down, and you are going to find that you can save yourself a great deal of time. And the best part, here, is that you can study these notes while you are doing other things. If you have recorded all of your notes, you can play them back while you clean the house, run, or cook. They’re much easier to handle than your bulky, old-fashioned paper notes.
It’s possible that neither of these methods appeal to you. If that’s the case, then you might think about taking the more expensive route and hiring a note taker. Some universities can arrange for you to receive a free note taker if you meet certain guidelines. While this may sound silly at first, a note taker is going to be able to make sure that you have access to good notes at the end of the semester. When you set out to study for your test, you are not going to have to worry about rereading large chunks of your textbook . You’ll have access to great notes, and you’ll be well along your way to success.
These are but a few of the solutions that you might consider. The next time that you’re at the campus store, you might look into buying yourself a laptop, a voice recorder, or applying for a note taker.
Who Is Buying Your Textbooks

Even for the parents who do not have to pay for schoolbooks on top of the private school’s tuition, the cost of the tuition most assuredly includes the price of the books and materials necessary for the school year.
In college, each student must finance or purchase his or her own textbooks and the reading requirement list gets longer and more expensive as you go along. Some courses may have a page or more of reading materials required for the class. The cost of books each semester can quickly add up to more than the average cost of over $1,200 per year in college books.
The average price of a college book is over $65. You can quickly do the math and realize that if you take 6 classes and each class has at least 2 required reading materials, which is a very conservative assumption, then a student is likely to spend an average of $780. Of course, some of these textbooks may be purchased used, which saves a considerable amount of money. And still yet, some of the books may be printed by the university printer and cost significantly less.
Indeed, there are a number of ways to save money on college books, private school materials, home school curriculum and even lengthen the use and lower the cost of public school books. When the money for these materials comes right out of your pocket and out of your taxes every year, you will find ways to make your penny stretch further and get more use out of the books you buy.
